Ein Planetengetriebe besteht aus drei Zahnradtypen: einem Sonnenrad, Planetenrädern und einem Hohlrad. Das Sonnenrad befindet sich im Zentrum des Getriebes und überträgt bei hoher Drehzahl das Drehmoment auf die Planetenräder, die üblicherweise auf einem beweglichen Planetenträger montiert sind. Die um die zentrale Achse rotierenden Planetenräder kämmen mit dem Sonnenrad und einem äußeren Hohlrad. Durch die Drehung aller Planetenträger wird ein hohes Drehmoment bei niedriger Drehzahl erzeugt.
